Agency Real Property Profile

USDA has 58.8 million square feet of space, of which 41.5 million square feet is Federally owned, 16.8 million square feet is leased, and 0.5 million square feet of space held by permit or agreement. The graph to the right shows the type of space USDA has in its inventory.  USDA held 25,540 buildings in the real property portfolio at the end of FY10. Examples include 1,939 warehouses, 33 schools, 4,636 offices, 789 laboratories, 1,872 family houses, and 1,476 dormitories/barracks. USDA has 4 properties on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.The "All Others" slice of the graph is made up of numerous minor categories that includes laboratories, hospitals, prisons & detention centers and industrial buildings.

Reduction in Real Property Usage

USDA’s goal for cost savings by the end of the fiscal year 2012 is $300 million. The chart “Progress Towards the Goal” will show what the agency has achieved to date in real property cost savings.

Breakdown of Reduction

USDA is committed to meeting the goals of the June 10, 2010 Presidential Memorandum by identifying and eliminating excess properties and enacting better asset management practices in utilization, operation cost management, and sustainability. In FY10, USDA realized $42.3 M in savings in real property disposals, lease consolidations and terminations, and sustainability efforts. The projected real property savings is $235.7M in FY11 and $22.1 M in FY 12. These savings will be achieved by USDA’s continued efforts in disposing of excess and underutilized assets and seeking opportunities for space consolidation, hoteling, and telework.
